Athlete of the Month: Wolf Rudolf
Athlete of the Month
Our community is SO proud of our May Athlete of the Month Wolf Rudolf! Wolf is one of those athletes that walks in with a HUGE smile on his face and has nothing but encouraging and positive things to say. When it's time to workout, he puts his head down and moves through the workouts with GRIT. Although Wolf has a very extensive background in weight training, this is his first year training only CrossFit. Wolf competed in the CrossFit Open this year and because of his outstanding performance he qualified for the CrossFit Regional Qualifiers. This was an online competition where the top 200 finishers from the Open in their respective age groups compete 4 WODs over one weekend. The top 20 from each category move on to the CrossFit Games and this year Wolf finished 73rd. Congratulation Wolf! Next year... CrossFit Games 2019.
What were you doing before CrossFit
I’ve always cross-trained. I got my first weight set in 7th grade and never looked back. Until CrossFit I was working without any real measure of improvement. Sure I would run races, perform max lifts at the gym, and do sports performance style training, but that still didn’t allow me to test my entire athletic arsenal. CrossFit allows me to celebrate the daily wins as well as take note on what needs work.
What kind of animal would you consider yourself during a WOD?
Is it cheesy to say a Wolf? :)
Actually it is kind of appropriate. A Wolf is comfortable as a lone hunter- Methodical, efficient, and trusting his instincts. But a groups energy really gives me a boost. My family loves the movie Jungle Book. You know how the saying goes… “the strength of the Wolf is the pack,” and I surround myself with a strong pack! Plus, the Wolf doesn’t perform in the circus.
What is your most favorite or least favorite movement?
I like most body-weight movements and anythings requiring reactive forces, like double under and box jumps. If I don’t like a movement it’s probably something I need to work on! I wouldn’t say I am the best at any one skill, my strength is I don’t have a wheelhouse.
What is your pre or post WOD routine?
Does eating count? Just ask my wife how I do when I’m short on fuel.
What is your biggest accomplishment since starting CrossFit?
Aside from watching our kids grow and learn about their bodies, movement, and the benefits of activity and a strong and supportive social network, my biggest accomplishment in Crossfit has to be the recent Masters online qualifier. Top 200 in the world was pretty cool. Top 100 made me nervous, I was actually going somewhere with this, haha.
What is your favorite WOD?
I don’t have a favorite WOD. I do enjoy making one up in honor of someone, or throwing one together with Bri because we actually have a free moment together!
What is your favorite motivational quote?
“I love those who can smile in trouble, who can gather strength from distress, and grow brave by reflection. ’Tis the business of little minds to shrink, but they whose heart is firm, and whose conscience approves their conduct, will pursue their principles unto death.” - Da Vinci
What is some advise you’d give to someone new to CrossFit?
Check your ego at the door. Leave your assumptions behind and bring an open mind. Be coachable, trust the process, and don’t make it just about you.
